Gränslöshet I översättning – översättarens gränser
Östra Finlands universitet, Joensuu 15.–16.4.2016
Det XIV Symposiet kring forskning i översättning och tolkning (KäTu-symposiet) arrangeras vid Östra Finlands universitet 15.–16.4.2016. Syftet med det årliga KäTu-symposiet är att skapa ett forum för översättare och tolkar samt personer som forskar i översättning och tolkning, ett forum för diskussion om fenomen på fältet, aktuella forskningsprojekt och ståndpunkter och framsteg inom vetenskapen.
Temat för 2016 års symposium är Gränslöshet i översättning – översättarens gränser. Med detta tema vill vi lyfta fram översättning och tolkning som flerdimensionella fenomen.
Symposiets första utskick och inbjudan till föredrag har publicerats i oktober 2015.
Andra utskicket, som innehåller information om anmälning, betalning, inkvartering och andra praktiska frågor, har publicerats i december 2015.

Second Circular and Call for Papers
THEME
The theme of KäTu 2016 is Illimitable translation – limits of a translator. With this theme we wish to draw attention to the nature of translation and interpreting as a multifaceted phenomenon.
Translation and interpreting have been in the media spotlight this year for various reasons. Newspaper columns and letters to the editor have contributed to a heated debate over what it takes to be a translator and who is allowed to translate. Our field cannot escape the effects of the current societal developments, such as the refugee crisis in Europe, technological innovations and work fragmentation. This is where the KäTu 2016 theme Illimitable translation – limits of a translator arises from. What exactly are we talking about when we talk about translation and interpreting? What can the activity of ‘translation’ involve? Why and in what kind of situation translation takes place? Who – or what – translates? Who is allowed to interpret? Who can translate? Who is a professional translator? Who interprets but is not an interpreter? Who is allowed to talk about translation? Who is allowed to teach translation and interpreting?
The theme can be approached, for example, from the following angles:

PURPOSE
The purpose of the annual KäTu Symposia is to offer a common forum for researchers, translators and interpreters to exchange ideas and discuss developments in the field, present ongoing research and survey the state and status of Translation Studies. PhD students are an important target audience of each of the symposia, which offer doctoral candidates opportunities to receive feedback during the various stages of their research.
For more than a decade, the KäTu Symposia have gathered together professionals and scholars from all corners of the fields of translation and interpreting, both as audience and speakers. Each symposium is organized in turn by a Finnish university offering training for translators and interpreters together with the Teachers’ and Researchers’ Section of the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (SKTL).
PLENARY PRESENTATIONS
The plenary lectures are presented by Hanna Risku (Professor for Translation Studies, University of Graz) and Leena Kolehmainen (Associate Professor for German language and Culture, University of Eastern Finland). Risku speaks with the title ”Muutoksia käännösprojektien hallinnan kentällä: etnografisen pitkittäistutkimuksen satoa” (“Changes in translation project management: results of a longitudinal ethnographic study”), and Kolehmainen’s title is ”Kieli- ja käännöstieteen rajalla” (“On the boundary of Linguistics and Translation Studies”). Both lectures are given in Finnish.
WORKSHOPS
The workshops will be held in two-hour sessions and may be used to address a broad topic in general terms (as panel discussions or in small groups) or to investigate a specific subject together from a problem-solving standpoint. There will be a total of four workshops. Please note that the workshops will be held mainly in Finnish. Registration is required via the symposium’s electronic registration form.
Workshop 1: A practical guidebook for aspiring translators and interpreters, led by Pia von Essen, Tiina Kinnunen and Liisa Leppänen.
Workshop 2: Methods of teaching translation and interpreting, led by Päivi Kuusi, Anne Rautiainen and Minna Ruokonen (University of Eastern Finland).
Workshop 3: Assessment in translation courses, led by Mari Pakkala-Weckström and Juha Eskelinen (University of Helsinki).
Workshop 4: Panel discussion on translation from/into minority languages, organized by Kiännä!-project (University of Eastern Finland).

PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS
The symposium also contains presentations (20 + 10 minutes) in parallel sections. A separate session is reserved for posters (and refreshments), and the best poster will be awarded.
Please send proposals for section papers and posters by January 22, 2016. All proposals (max. 300 words) are to be sent as email attachments in rtf, doc or docx format to katu2016@uef.fi. Please mention whether the proposal is for a section paper or a poster in the subject heading and in the proposal itself.
Approval of section papers and posters will be announced by February 19, 2016.
TRAINING EVENT FOR PhD STUDENTS, APRIL 14, 2016
Tutkimuksen monet yleisöt ja yhteisöt (“Audiences and Communities of Research”)
A pre-symposium event with the theme Audiences and Communities of Research will be organized on Thursday afternoon, April 14, 2016. The event is aimed at PhD students in particular, but it is open to all symposium participants. The trainers and discussion leaders in the event are Kaisa Koskinen (Professor for Translation Studies), Tuija Kinnunen (Professor for German Language and Translation) and Helka Riionheimo (University Lecturer in Finnish). Please note that the working language in the event is Finnish.
LANGUAGES
Finnish, Swedish and English are the primary working languages at the symposium and its sections. Contact the organizers for information about using other languages and the availability of interpreting services.
PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE
Friday, 15 April: Registration will commence at 9 a.m. in the lobby of Agora-building at the University of Eastern Finland (street address: Yliopistokatu 4). The first workshops are organized at 9-12. The symposium opening and Hanna Risku’s plenary lecture are scheduled to start at 12.30, after which coffee will be served. The afternoon is dedicated to section papers in and the early evening to poster presentations and refreshments. The symposium get-together/dinner will be at 7 p.m.
Saturday, 16 April: Leena Kolehmainen’s plenary lecture is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., followed by workshops and section papers in parallel sessions. The symposium will close by 4 p.m.
TIEDON HELMI (PEARL OF KNOWLEDGE) -AWARD
Tiedon helmi -award, granted annually by the Teachers’ and Researchers’ Section of the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters, will this year be presented in the symposium. The award is granted either for research or teaching merits, on alternating years. In 2016 the award is granted for teaching merits, on the basis of suggestions coming from members of the Teachers’ and Researchers’ section. Suggestions with grounds can be sent by February 29 to the Section secretary Minna Ruokonen, e-mail minna.ruokonen (at) uef.fi.
PUBLICATION
All speakers and poster presenters are invited to submit an article to MikaEL, the Electronic Journal of the KäTu Symposium on Translation and Interpreting Studies, which is now a peer-reviewed publication; the first peer-reviewed volume, based on KäTu 2015 Symposium, will be published shortly before KäTu 2016. Papers from previous symposia can be found at http://www.sktl.fi/liitto/seminaarit/mikael-verkkojulkaisu/. The editors of the next volume will be announced at the symposium, and writing instructions will be sent to the symposium participants via email afterwards.
REGISTRATION AND SYMPOSIUM FEE
Registration for the KäTu2016 symposium is done via an electronic form available on the symposium’s website at https://katu2016.wordpress.com/. Registration opens on February 19, 2016, and closes on March 18, 2016, and it is binding. The same form is used to sign up for the workshops and the symposium dinner. More information on the symposium dinner can be found on the symposium website before the registration closes.
The symposium fee is 70 euros, with reduced prices for members of the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters and postgraduate students (40 euros) and graduate students (20 euros). The fee includes the symposium material (including an abstract booklet), coffee and refreshments during Friday’s poster session.
The organizers will send an electronic invoice to all those who have registered, for the participation fee and any possible dinner payments.

Näiltä sivuilta löydät tietoa XIV Kääntämisen ja tulkkauksen tutkimuksen symposiumista, joka järjestetään Itä-Suomen yliopistossa, Joensuun kampuksella 15.–16.4.2016. KäTu-symposiumien tarkoituksena on tarjota kääntäjille ja tulkeille sekä kääntämisen ja tulkkauksen tutkijoille ja kouluttajille foorumi, jolla he voivat keskustella alan ilmiöistä, käynnissä olevista tutkimushankkeista ja tieteenalan tilasta ja kehityksestä.
Vuonna 2016 symposiumi pidetään Joensuussa, ja teemana on kääntämisen rajattomuus – kääntäjän rajat. Tällä teemalla haluamme nostaa esiin kääntämistä ja tulkkausta moniulotteisina ilmiöinä.
KäTu2015-symposiumia koskevat kiertokirjeet julkaistaan näillä symposiumin verkkosivuilla.
Ensimmäinen kiertokirje ja esitelmöintikutsu on julkaistu lokakuussa 2016.
